Lost every key to your Range Rover or Land Rover from 2019 or newer? The car won’t open or start, and the alarm may be set. This is one of the hardest car key jobs, but it can usually be fixed without buying new control modules from the dealer. This guide explains what is happening inside the car, what to do first, and how Carkey Masters makes a new key in Nairobi.

Why a lost key on a newer Land Rover is a bigger job

On these cars the key is part of a security system, not just a remote:

  • The smart key talks to the car by radio. Antennas inside the doors, cabin and boot pick up the key. A receiver passes its signal to a module called the RFA (remote function actuator).
  • The RFA decides whether the key is genuine. It works with the body control module (BCM) to unlock the doors and allow the engine to start.
  • On newer models these modules lock themselves. Once the car’s keys are set up, the modules will not simply accept a new key. When every key is lost, the car stays in a secure state with the alarm set.

The usual dealer answer is to replace the locked RFA (and sometimes the BCM) with new modules, then program new keys. New modules are expensive, may need to be ordered, and the car often has to be towed to the workshop.

With specialist equipment, we can in most cases keep the modules already in your car. Often we only replace the processor chip inside the RFA (chip types such as J9C3, JPLA, K8D2 and M9R3) instead of buying a whole new module, then program the new key and switch the alarm off.

What to do first

  1. Search for a spare key at home or the office. If you find one, a spare is far cheaper than an all-keys-lost job.
  2. Don’t let anyone try unknown tools on the car. Failed attempts can leave the security system in a worse state.
  3. Get the logbook and the owner’s ID ready. We need proof of ownership before we make any key.
  4. WhatsApp us the model, year and chassis number (on the logbook or at the bottom of the windscreen) and where the car is. We will tell you the next step.

How we make a new key

  1. We check the logbook and ID.
  2. We confirm the exact model, year and security system, and give you the price before we start.
  3. Where the RFA is locked, we usually replace its processor chip instead of the whole module.
  4. We program the new key to your car and switch the alarm off.
  5. We remove the lost keys from the car’s memory, so they can no longer open or start it.
  6. We test locking, unlocking, keyless entry and starting with you.

How much does it cost?

The price for an all-keys-lost job depends on the model, the year and what the car’s security system needs, so call or WhatsApp us for a price. We confirm it before any work starts.

If you still have one working key, a spare is much cheaper:

Avoid this next time

  • Get a spare key now while you still have a working one. It costs a fraction of an all-keys-lost job.
  • Bring all your keys when you add a spare, so every key is set up together.
  • Keep the spare at home, not in the car.

Questions

Can you make a key for a 2019+ Range Rover without going to the dealer?

Yes, in most cases. With specialist equipment we can program a new key and switch the alarm off while keeping the car’s existing modules. Often only the processor chip inside the RFA is replaced. We confirm what your car needs before we start.

Do you replace the RFA module?

Usually not the whole module. In most cases we replace only the processor chip inside the RFA (types such as J9C3, JPLA, K8D2 and M9R3), which costs far less than a new module from the dealer. We confirm what your car needs before we start.

What documents do I need?

The car’s logbook and the owner’s ID. If the car is in a company name, bring a letter from the company. We do not make keys without proof of ownership.

If I find my old key later, will it still work?

No. When we make the new key we remove the lost keys from the car, so a lost or stolen key can no longer open or start it. This protects you if the key was stolen.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the model, the year and what the car’s security system needs. Call or WhatsApp us with the model, year and chassis number and we give you the price before any work starts. A spare key while you still have a working key is far cheaper: from KSh 25,000 for 2019–2022 cars.
