Why DPF and EGR systems block
DPF (diesel particulate filter)
The DPF traps soot from the exhaust and burns it off during "regeneration", which needs steady driving at speed. Short trips and Nairobi traffic mean many diesels never get the chance, so the filter slowly fills up.
EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve
The EGR valve sends part of the exhaust back into the engine to lower emissions. Over time the soot and oil fumes in that gas build up in the valve and intake manifold, choking the engine and cutting its efficiency.
AdBlue (SCR)
Newer diesels also use AdBlue. Crystallised fluid, a failed NOx sensor or a faulty pump bring up warnings and can limit engine power.

A diesel fuel additive that helps burn off soot inside the particulate filter, without removing the filter. It works best when the DPF is in the early or middle stage of blocking.
- Add it to the fuel tank, then fill up with diesel.
- Drive at least 50 km, keeping the engine above 2,500–3,000 rpm for about 30 seconds at a time.
- For prevention, use it every 3,000–5,000 km.
Badly blocked or damaged DPF? A cleaner won't fix it. Bring the vehicle in for a diagnosis and we'll advise on the right repair.

How much does DPF or EGR repair cost?
It depends on the vehicle and what we find. We start with a computer diagnosis, then give you the price for the cleaning, part replacement or ECU solution before any work starts. Send your make, model and year on WhatsApp for a guide price.
Do you clean DPF filters?
We don't machine-clean DPF filters at the moment. For an early or partly blocked DPF we sell the XADO Atomex DPF Cleaner (KSh 3,500), which you add to the fuel tank. For a badly blocked or damaged filter we diagnose the vehicle and advise on the right repair or an ECU solution.
Do you clean EGR valves?
Yes. We remove the carbon build-up from the EGR valve, or fit a new valve if it is worn out, then reset the engine adaptations. EGR work is done at our Kiambu Road branch.

At our Kiambu Road branch, where we have the workshop space for DPF and EGR jobs. Our Westlands branch at Museum Hill Centre can answer questions and book you in. Kiambu Road is open Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Why does my diesel vehicle go into limp mode?
Limp mode protects the engine when it detects a fault. Common causes are a blocked DPF, a stuck EGR valve or an AdBlue or NOx sensor problem. A diagnosis shows the exact cause.
